Does B.C. Still Pay a Car Rebate?

No. B.C. halted its CleanBC Go Electric rebate for passenger vehicles on May 15, 2025, and BC Hydro confirms it has stayed closed ever since (BC Hydro). As long as that holds, the federal rebate at the dealership is the only purchase incentive available on a new car in B.C.

What decides your amount is the year the dealer files the paperwork, not the model year and not the delivery date. The dealer's filing date sets your amount: $5,000 on an electric car in 2026, $4,000 from January 1, 2027. Send the short form today and nearby dealers will email you their price and the rebates you qualify for.

British Columbia EV Incentives in 2026

There are two ways to save in B.C.:

  • The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which Transport Canada runs and which comes off the price right at the dealer
  • The BC Hydro rebate for a home charger

A plug-in hybrid carries a battery you plug into the wall plus a gas engine for long drives. It receives half of what an electric car gets. A plain hybrid that you cannot plug in receives nothing. Canada has no federal EV tax credit. The federal support is this rebate, applied when you sign the purchase papers (Transport Canada).

Which Cars Get the Federal Rebate?

The vehicle needs to meet these federal rules (Transport Canada):

  • Deal price at the end: $50,000 or under, and no cap at all if the car was built in Canada
  • Assembled in Canada or in a country that has a free-trade deal with Canada
  • New, but a demonstrator with fewer than 10,000 km on it also counts
  • Weighing under 8,500 pounds and highway-capable

A demonstrator is a car the dealership lets shoppers take out on the road. Over the program's five years, a single rebate is allowed per person. The dealer confirms that you and the car qualify, deducts the rebate, and recovers the money themselves, so there is nothing for you to file.

The 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Preferred RWD Long Range, Kia EV9 Light RWD and Honda Prologue EX AWD are not on the federal rebate list, and each has an MSRP above $50,000. Tesla's Model 3 isn't on the list, but the 2026 Model Y RWD is, which brings it to $44,990.

How Much Do You Get on a Lease?

On a lease, you receive a portion of the rebate or the whole thing, based on the length of the term. These figures are for 2026.

Common Questions

How Much Did B.C. Pay Before the Pause?

Between August 2, 2022 and the pause, it paid a maximum of $4,000 for an electric car, or $2,000 for a shorter-range plug-in hybrid, subject to income limits (BC Gov News).

Do Other Provinces Chip In Extra Money?

These days, only Quebec and Manitoba put extra money on top of the federal rebate. Those two programs don't help you in B.C., where the federal rebate is the only purchase rebate, so it's best to lock in your 2026 amount now.

When Does the Federal Program End?

It opened on February 16, 2026 and continues through March 31, 2031. As of October 1, 2026, $1.92 billion remained of its $2.275 billion. The value steps down over time: in 2028 an electric car earns $3,000, and in 2030 that drops again to $2,000.

What Was iZEV?

The earlier federal rebate was called iZEV. It stopped taking claims on January 10, 2025, once its funding was gone, and formally closed on March 31, 2025. The program running now took its place.

Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in British Columbia?

One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in British Columbia after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
