How the Prince Edward Island EV Rebate Works Now

The PEI EV rebate is on hold, but you can still get up to $5,000 off a new electric car at the dealer with the federal rebate this year. Here is what's available right now: | Source | Electric car | Plug-in hybrid | |---|---|---| | Province (paused since April 2026) | $0 | $0 | | Federal, 2026 | $5,000 | $2,500 | | Federal, 2027 | $4,000 | $2,000 | With the 2026 federal rebate, a new 2027 Nissan LEAF S comes down to $29,998, the lowest price among the cars listed here. The federal rebate on an electric car drops by $1,000 on January 1, 2027, and what counts is the year your dealer submits the paperwork, not the model year or delivery date. Right now, the federal rebate is the only one Island buyers can get. The Island put its own Electric Vehicle Incentive Program on hold in the April 2026 budget. Before that, the Island would chip in $4,000 toward a battery-electric car. Buying before 2027 keeps the full federal amount.

Electric Vehicle Incentive Program: What Changed

  • January 8, 2025: The Island incentive is reset: $4,000 on a battery-electric car, $2,000 on a plug-in hybrid.
  • April 2026: Prince Edward Island pauses its Electric Vehicle Incentive Program in the 2026 budget.

The Federal Rebate That Covers the Island

The federal rebate is called the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, and Transport Canada runs it. It started February 16, 2026 and ends March 31, 2031. Your dealer takes the rebate straight off the price, so you don't file anything yourself.

The dealer makes sure you and the car both qualify, then bills Transport Canada for the amount. What you get depends on the year the dealer sends in that paperwork, not the model year and not the delivery date. Here is how the amounts step down over the program's life:

  • 2026: $5,000 for a battery-electric car, $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid
  • 2027: $4,000 and $2,000
  • 2028 and 2029: $3,000 and $1,500
  • 2030 and 2031: $2,000 and $1,000

Think of a plug-in hybrid as two power sources in one car: a battery you charge from a wall outlet, plus a gas engine. Ordinary hybrids you can't plug in don't get any federal rebate.

Who Qualifies, and for What?

  • Cost: the deal can't top $50,000 once everything is added up. Cars built in Canada skip the cap.
  • Where it's from: Canada itself, or any country with a free-trade deal with Canada.
  • How new: it must be a new vehicle; a demo model with fewer than 10,000 km on the odometer also works.
  • How big: under 8,500 pounds, and it must be allowed on highways.
  • How many: one rebate per person across the program's five years. A business or organization can claim up to ten.

You can lease instead, and the amount scales with the term. In 2026:

Lease termShare of rebateElectric carPlug-in hybrid
48 months or longer100%$5,000$2,500
36 months75%$3,750$1,875
24 months50%$2,500$1,250
12 months25%$1,250$625

Check the exact model before counting on a rebate: the 2026 Kia EV9 Light RWD, Honda Prologue EX AWD and Hyundai IONIQ 5 Preferred RWD Long Range are over the $50,000 limit and aren't on the federal list. Of the Teslas, only the Model Y RWD is. Send the short form, and dealers near you will email their numbers and the rebates that fit your situation.

Changes to the Island's Own Incentive

  • On January 8, 2025, the Island reworked its amounts: battery-electric buyers got $4,000, and plug-in hybrid buyers got $2,000.
  • In April 2026, the Island's budget put the program on hold.

While it sits on hold, the dealer's federal rebate is the only purchase rebate you can get.

Common Questions

Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in Prince Edward Island?

One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in Prince Edward Island after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
