Each figure below starts from the Canadian base price and subtracts the 2026 federal rebate.

  • 2027 Nissan LEAF S: this battery electric car starts at $34,998, and the $5,000 rebate brings it down to $29,998.
  • 2027 Kia EV3 Light FWD: battery electric, priced at $36,995, so the $5,000 rebate leaves $31,995.
  • 2026 Kia EV4 Light: battery electric at $38,995, which becomes $33,995 after the $5,000 rebate.
  • 2025 Kia Niro PHEV LX: a plug-in hybrid costing $36,795, reduced to $34,295 by the $2,500 rebate.
  • 2025 FIAT 500e Red: battery electric, listed at $39,995, landing at $34,995 once the $5,000 comes off.
  • 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT: battery electric, priced at $39,999, so $34,999 after the $5,000 rebate.

The federal list does not include every model. The list leaves out the 2027 Tesla Model 3 Premium RWD, so that car earns nothing. Only one Tesla makes the list, the 2026 Model Y RWD, which works out to $44,990 once the rebate comes off. Pricier options such as Hyundai's IONIQ 5, Kia's EV9 and the Cadillac LYRIQ fail on both counts: no listing, and above the $50,000 cap.

EV Charger Rebate in Northwest Territories

The Alliance used to add $500 toward a Level 2 home charger on top of its EV rebate. That funding is gone too, so no charger rebate is going out at the moment.

How the Federal Rebate Works in the Territory

The federal program behind this is the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which Transport Canada runs. It began February 16, 2026 and ends March 31, 2031.

Your car needs to check these boxes:

  • The final deal price can be no more than $50,000. Cars built in Canada are exempt from the price cap.
  • It has to be built in Canada or somewhere Canada has a free-trade deal with.
  • It has to be new. A demonstrator with fewer than 10,000 km on it still counts.
  • It has to weigh less than 8,500 pounds and be highway-capable.

To qualify, a car needs to be fully electric or a plug-in hybrid. A regular hybrid you cannot plug in gets you nothing. There is no federal EV tax credit either, so this rebate is all the federal help there is.

How the Rebate Gets Paid When You Buy or Lease

The dealer confirms that both you and the car qualify, knocks the rebate off your price, then recovers the money from Transport Canada. Nothing is filed by you.

What matters for the amount is the year the dealer sends in the eligibility assessment, not the model year and not when you take delivery. Each person can claim one rebate during the program's five-year span, while a business or organization may claim up to ten.

What the Rebate Pays, Year by Year

Here is what each program year gives you:

  • 2026: $5,000 for a battery electric car and $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid
  • 2027: $4,000 for a battery electric car and $2,000 for a plug-in hybrid
  • 2028 and 2029: $3,000 for a battery electric car and $1,500 for a plug-in hybrid
  • 2030 and 2031: $2,000 for a battery electric car and $1,000 for a plug-in hybrid

The $5,000 depends on the year your dealer submits the paperwork, so a dealer filing in 2026 gets it before it drops to $4,000 on January 1, 2027. Fill in the short form and dealers near you will reply by email with what they charge and which rebates apply to you.

Leasing an Electric Car

The longer the lease, the bigger your share of the rebate. In the 2026 program year, a lease pays these amounts.

Lease lengthShare of rebateBattery electricPlug-in hybrid
48 months or longerFull rebate$5,000$2,500
36 monthsThree-quarters$3,750$1,875
24 monthsHalf$2,500$1,250

Where the Arctic Energy Alliance Rebate Stands

The Alliance's rebate once paid $5,000. While it had funding, you claimed it from the Alliance after buying, and the base price of the car could not go over $55,000.

The territorial budget brought down on March 5, 2025 included no EV rebate money for 2025-26. The year before, the amount was $153,000. As Cabin Radio covered, no fresh dollars were added, so the $5,000 from the Arctic Energy Alliance isn't being paid.

The Earlier Federal Program

Before this one there was iZEV, which paid up to $5,000. It stopped taking claims on January 10, 2025 once the money ran out, and it shut down for good on March 31, 2025. The current program took its place.

The full $5,000 is set for 2026, and on January 1, 2027 it drops to $4,000. Send the short form now, and dealers near you will email you their asking price along with the rebates that apply to you.

Common Questions

Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in Northwest Territories?

One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in Northwest Territories after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
