How the New Brunswick EV Rebate Works Now
New Brunswick has no EV rebate of its own anymore. The provincial program closed on July 1, 2025, so anyone buying here now relies on the federal rebate alone. Right now a new electric car gets $5,000 off at the dealer, and that drops to $4,000 on January 1, 2027. | Rebate | Electric car | Plug-in hybrid | |---|---|---| | New Brunswick provincial rebate | $0 | $0 | | Federal rebate in 2026 | $5,000 | $2,500 | | Federal rebate in 2027 | $4,000 | $2,000 | The 2027 Nissan LEAF S lists at $29,998 after a $5,000 federal rebate if the dealer submits its eligibility assessment in 2026. Fill in the short form now to compare prices before the federal rebate drops in 2027. Dealers near you will email what they charge plus the rebates that apply to you.

The Provincial Program That Ended
The province used to run the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program, worth up to $5,000. On March 27, 2025, the government announced the program would end, and it shut down on July 1, 2025. No provincial program for cars exists right now.
The federal rebate you can still get
Its official name is the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, or EVAP. Transport Canada runs it, and the terms are identical no matter which province you live in. It opened February 16, 2026 and runs until March 31, 2031. A plug-in hybrid pairs a petrol motor with a battery that plugs into an outlet. Hybrids you cannot plug in do not qualify.
The rebate amount falls in 2027, then falls again in later years:
| Year | Plug-in hybrid | Electric car |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $2,500 | $5,000 |
| 2027 | $2,000 | $4,000 |
| 2028 | $1,500 | $3,000 |
| 2029 | $1,500 | $3,000 |
| 2030 | $1,000 | $2,000 |
| 2031 | $1,000 | $2,000 |
What matters is the year the dealer submits the eligibility assessment, the check a dealer does to confirm you and the car both qualify. Model year and delivery date play no role in setting the amount. So if your dealer sends in the paperwork before the end of 2026, an electric car gets the full $5,000, and from January it's $4,000.
How the Rebate Reaches You at the Dealer
There is nothing for you to apply for. Instead, the dealer verifies that you and the car qualify, lowers the price by the rebate when you sign, then recovers the money from Transport Canada. No federal EV tax credit exists for you to claim afterwards, since this sale-time rebate is the only federal help on offer.
Each person is allowed a single EVAP rebate during the program's five years. Businesses and organizations can claim up to ten. You only get one rebate, so it's worth seeing a few dealer prices first, and the short form brings them to your inbox.
Which Cars Qualify?
To qualify, a car must meet every one of these conditions:
- Total deal price of $50,000 or less, and no cap at all on cars built in Canada
- Assembled in Canada, or in a country Canada holds a free-trade agreement with
- New, and demonstrators under 10,000 km also count
- Under 8,500 pounds and highway-capable
A few well-known models do not make the cut. Hyundai's IONIQ 5 Preferred RWD Long Range for 2026 lists at $55,499, and Kia's EV9 Light RWD for that year is $59,995, so both sit above the $50,000 limit and neither is on the federal list. Tesla's 2027 Model 3 Premium RWD is missing from the list too. One Tesla does appear, the 2026 Model Y RWD, which works out to $44,990 once the rebate comes off.
Leasing Instead of Buying
Leased cars also qualify for the federal rebate, though the payment scales with the length of the lease. Here are the 2026 figures:
| Lease length | Electric car | Plug-in hybrid | Share of rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 months or longer | $5,000 | $2,500 | 100% |
| 36 months | $3,750 | $1,875 | 75% |
| 24 months | $2,500 | $1,250 | 50% |
| 12 months | $1,250 | $625 | 25% |

Common Questions
Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in New Brunswick?
One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in New Brunswick after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
