Some well-known cars get nothing. The federal list leaves out the Tesla Model 3 Premium RWD ($39,490). Models such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Kia EV9, the Honda Prologue, and the BMW i4 are absent from the list as well, and each one costs more than the $50,000 cap allows. Among Teslas, the only qualifying model is the 2026 Model Y RWD, which works out to $44,990 once the rebate comes off. EV Charger Rebate in Newfoundland and Labrador
Right now, neither the province nor the utility offers help with home charger costs in Newfoundland and Labrador, so the federal rebate off the car is where the savings are. Check the NL Hydro rebate page for updates.
What You Get from the Federal Rebate
The money comes from the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which Transport Canada runs. It started February 16, 2026 and ends March 31, 2031. Regular hybrids you cannot plug in do not qualify.
What you get is set by the year the dealer files the eligibility assessment, not the model year and not the day you pick up the car. That filing is the dealer's way of confirming that both you and the car meet the rules. The dealer handles that filing for you.
In 2026 the rebate is $5,000 for a fully electric car and $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid. From 2027 it steps down to $4,000 and $2,000. In both 2028 and 2029 the amounts are $3,000 and $1,500, and for 2030 and 2031 they are $2,000 and $1,000.
Who Can Get the Rebate?
Your vehicle has to pass all of these checks:
- The final transaction value must be $50,000 or less. There is no price cap on a car made in Canada.
- It must be built in Canada or in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada.
- It must be new. A demonstrator under 10,000 km still counts.
- It must weigh under 8,500 pounds and be able to drive on the highway.
Each person can claim one rebate across the program's five-year run. A business or organization can claim as many as ten.
How the Dealer Hands You the Rebate
The dealer confirms that you and the car qualify, subtracts the rebate from the price when you buy or lease, then recovers the money from Transport Canada. You do not file anything.
Canada has no federal EV tax credit. This rebate, applied right at the dealership, is the federal help.
Leasing
The longer the lease, the bigger your share of the rebate. These numbers use the 2026 amounts.
With a lease of 48 months or more, you keep the whole rebate: $5,000 on a fully electric car and $2,500 on a plug-in hybrid. A 36-month lease keeps three quarters of it, which works out to $3,750 and $1,875. A 24-month lease keeps half, or $2,500 and $1,250, and a 12-month lease keeps a quarter, or $1,250 and $625.
The Earlier Federal Program
iZEV, the program before this one, offered as much as $5,000. Its funding ran dry and it stopped on January 10, 2025, then closed for good on March 31, 2025. EVAP took its place; as of October 1, 2026 it still had $1.92 billion of its $2.275 billion.

Common Questions
Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in Newfoundland and Labrador?
One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in Newfoundland and Labrador after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
