Every trim on the list · prices after rebates in every province (CSV)

The federal money comes from the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program, which Transport Canada runs. It works the same way no matter which province or territory you live in. The dealer knocks it off whatever you pay, whether you buy or take a lease, so there is no form for you to fill in.

Budget EVs Sorted by Price Once the Rebate Comes Off

Here are the 12 least expensive models on the federal rebate list, using each one's cheapest trim. The sticker price shown is the MSRP, the figure the manufacturer recommends before any rebate or discount from the dealer. Range tells you how far the car travels on one full charge, based on Natural Resources Canada ratings.

Which Budget EVs Travel the Furthest?

In this budget group, the 2026 Kia EV4 Light leads on range. It travels 552 km and costs $33,995 after the rebate. Next come the Ford Mustang Mach-E Select at 515 km and the Equinox EV LT from Chevrolet at 513 km, at $39,995 and $39,999 after the rebate.

The FIAT 500e Red deserves a careful look. Its 227 km range is less than half of what you get from most cars priced anywhere near it.

Inexpensive Electric Cars in Quebec and Manitoba

Only two provinces offer their own rebate stacked on top of the federal one: Quebec and Manitoba. In both, the 2027 Nissan LEAF S remains the least expensive pick.

  • Manitoba adds $4,000 for a new car or $2,500 for a used one, bringing the LEAF S down to $25,998
  • Quebec adds up to $2,000 through Roulez vert, bringing the LEAF S down to $27,998
  • Every other province and territory adds nothing today, leaving the LEAF S at $29,998

Quebec's Roulez vert program closes at the end of 2026. Manitoba's rebate, meanwhile, got an extension past March 31, 2026 in the most recent budget.

A few provinces charge electric car owners a yearly fee, which pushes up the cost of keeping one:

Picking the Best Affordable Electric Car

That comes down to what you care about more: paying the least or getting the most kilometres per dollar. The LEAF S costs the least of the group, at $29,998 with the rebate applied, yet it still manages 488 km. Paying $4,000 more gets you into the Kia EV4 Light, which beats every other budget model with its 552 km.

If you mostly drive short hops around your city, the FIAT 500e Red at $34,995 might be all you need. On longer trips, though, its 227 km range falls well short of the rest.

Canada's Lowest-Cost Electric SUV

Among the affordable models marketed as small SUVs, the cheapest is the 2027 Kia EV3 Light FWD, at $31,995 once the federal rebate comes off. The 2027 Subaru Uncharted FWD sits just above it, at $35,995 after the rebate, with 496 km of range.

Some bigger SUVs miss out on the federal rebate because they exceed the $50,000 cap and are not on the list. Three examples are the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 ($55,499), the 2026 Honda Prologue ($59,990), and the 2026 Kia EV9 ($59,995).

Who Gets the Federal Rebate?

Eligibility requires that a car be new, under 8,500 pounds, able to drive on the highway, and built either in Canada or in a country Canada has a free-trade deal with. Demonstrators showing under 10,000 km also qualify. Each person can claim the rebate only once while the program lasts.

A plug-in hybrid combines a gas engine with a battery you plug into an outlet. It earns half of what a fully electric car gets. Hybrids that have no plug get nothing at all.

  • Claim filed in 2026: $5,000 fully electric, $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid
  • Claim filed in 2027: $4,000 fully electric, $2,000 for a plug-in hybrid
  • Claims filed in 2028 and 2029: $3,000 fully electric, $1,500 for a plug-in hybrid
  • Claims filed in 2030 and 2031: $2,000 fully electric, $1,000 for a plug-in hybrid

What you receive depends on the year the dealer submits the eligibility assessment, not on the model year or the date you drive it home.

Leased cars earn the rebate as well, and a lease of 48 months or more gets the whole amount. During 2026, leasing a fully electric car earns $3,750 over 36 months, $2,500 over 24 months, and $1,250 over 12 months.

Questions We Often Get

Is There a $13,000 Toyota EV?

Nothing on the Canadian rebate list from Toyota comes close to that price. The cheapest, the 2027 Toyota C-HR SE, stickers at $44,895, which works out to $39,895 once the federal rebate comes off.

Which Tesla Costs the Least in Canada?

Tesla's 2027 Model 3 Premium RWD carries a $39,490 sticker, yet it does not appear on the rebate list, so it earns no federal money. Only one Tesla qualifies: the 2026 Model Y RWD, which lands at $44,990 once the rebate comes off.

Which plug-in hybrid is the cheapest?

Kia's 2025 Niro PHEV LX stickers at $36,795, which drops to $34,295 after the $2,500 federal rebate.

Does Canada Offer a Federal EV Tax Credit?

No. The rebate the dealer subtracts from the price is the only federal assistance on offer. The program that came before it, called iZEV, was paused on January 10, 2025 once its funding was gone and shut down on March 31, 2025.

Could the rebate money run out?

The program holds $2.275 billion in total, and $1.92 billion was left on October 1, 2026. It is scheduled to keep going until March 31, 2031.
