If you buy or lease a new electric car in 2026, the federal government can take up to $5,000 off the price, as long as you and the car qualify and the car is on the Canada EV rebate list. Here's which cars qualify and what you'll pay. Transport Canada manages it, and the rebate comes off your price right at the dealership.

Cars That Qualify for the Rebate
The official list of qualifying vehicles covers the 33 models and 111 trims priced here. To qualify, a car must be either battery-electric or a plug-in hybrid. A plug-in hybrid carries a gas engine plus a battery you plug in to charge, while ordinary hybrids that have no plug get nothing.
To qualify, a car must satisfy each of these rules:
- Assembled in Canada, or in a country Canada has a free-trade deal with
- New, or a dealer demo car with under 10,000 km on it
- Weighing less than 8,500 pounds, and cleared for highway use
- A final transaction price of $50,000 or under, unless the car is built in Canada
The final transaction value means the price shown on your purchase or lease paperwork. Each person may claim one rebate for the whole program, while a business or organization may claim up to ten.
You do not submit any paperwork. Your dealer confirms that you and the car both qualify, applies the rebate to your price, then recovers the money from Transport Canada. Canada has no federal EV tax credit, so this at-the-sale rebate is the only federal help available.
Cheapest Electric Cars After the Rebate
The cheapest fully electric car after the rebate is the 2027 Nissan LEAF S. Its sticker is $34,998, which works out to $29,998 once the federal rebate is applied.
Among plug-in hybrids, the 2025 Kia Niro PHEV LX is the cheapest, listing at $36,795 before the rebate and $34,295 once it's applied. The right car for you will still come down to what you need.
What Do Electric Cars Cost Once the Rebate Is Applied?
These figures draw on the manufacturer's suggested retail price for each car sold in Canada, usually called MSRP. They reflect only the federal rebate, before anything a province adds.
| Vehicle | Kind | Sticker price | After the federal rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric | $34,998 | $29,998 | |
2025 Kia Niro PHEV LX | Plug-in | $36,795 | $34,295 |
2026 Tesla Model Y RWD | Battery-electric | $49,990 | $44,990 |
Of all Teslas, only the 2026 Model Y RWD is on the federal list. Tesla's 2027 Model 3 Premium RWD carries a lower sticker at $39,490, but it does not appear there, so no federal rebate applies to it.
2026 Electric Cars That Get No Federal Rebate
Some popular models are missing from the federal list and also sit above the $50,000 limit, so the federal rebate does not reach them.
Is 2026 the Best Year to Buy an EV?
If the rebate matters to you, 2026 is the best year to buy, because it drops to $4,000 in 2027 and keeps falling. What counts is the year your dealer files your rebate paperwork, not the car's model year or the day you take it home.
| Year of submission | Battery-electric | Plug-in |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $5,000 rebate | $2,500 rebate |
| 2027 | $4,000 rebate | $2,000 rebate |
| 2028 | $3,000 rebate | $1,500 rebate |
| 2029 | $3,000 rebate | $1,500 rebate |
| 2030 | $2,000 rebate | $1,000 rebate |
| 2031 | $2,000 rebate | $1,000 rebate |
This program holds $2.275 billion in all, with $1.92 billion still available on October 1, 2026. The federal program before this one, iZEV, stopped on January 10, 2025 when its funding was gone, and it shut down for good on March 31, 2025.
Lease Rebates by Lease Length
With a lease, you receive part or all of the rebate based on how long the lease lasts. Here are the 2026 figures.
| Term | Portion of rebate | Battery-electric | Plug-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 months or more | All (100%) | $5,000 | $2,500 |
| 36 months | Three-quarters (75%) | $3,750 | $1,875 |
| 24 months | Half (50%) | $2,500 | $1,250 |
| 12 months | A quarter (25%) | $1,250 | $625 |
Provincial Rebates Added to the Federal One
Right now only Quebec and Manitoba offer a rebate of their own. In every other province and territory, the federal rebate is all buyers get.
- Quebec: as much as $2,000 via Roulez vert for a new EV registered during 2026; the offer closes December 31, 2026, and a $125 annual EV fee starts in 2027
- Manitoba: $4,000 off a qualifying new electric car, or $2,500 off a used one, on top of the federal rebate. The 2026 budget extended the program past March 31, 2026.
- Ontario: its own rebate ended July 11, 2018, and none has come back since
- British Columbia: its rebate went on pause May 15, 2025
- Alberta: no rebate, and EVs pay a $200 yearly tax
- Saskatchewan: no rebate; EVs instead carry a $300 annual road-use charge
- Nova Scotia: the rebate is gone; starting October 1, 2026, renewals every two years include a $500 levy ($250 when the car is a plug-in hybrid)
- New Brunswick: its rebate ended on July 1, 2025
- Prince Edward Island: the rebate has been on hold since April 2026
- Newfoundland and Labrador: applications closed March 15, 2026
- Yukon: rebates stopped March 31, 2026
- Northwest Territories: nothing budgeted for rebates during 2025-26
- Nunavut: no territorial rebate
