What the Federal Rebate Means for Nova Scotia Buyers
Transport Canada runs the federal program, called the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program. In 2026, a fully electric car earns you $5,000, while a plug-in hybrid brings $2,500. A regular hybrid you cannot plug in does not qualify.
Your dealer confirms you and the car qualify, lowers the price by the rebate amount, then bills Transport Canada for it. There is no paperwork for you to send in.
What counts is the year the dealer sends in the eligibility check, not the model year and not when the car is delivered. For eligibility assessments submitted in 2027, the amounts fall to $4,000 for a fully electric car and $2,000 for a plug-in hybrid. They fall again in later years.
Which Cars Qualify?
- The deal's final price cannot go over $50,000. Cars built in Canada have no ceiling.
- The car has to come from Canada or from a country that has a free-trade deal with Canada.
- It has to be new. A demonstrator with fewer than 10,000 km still counts.
- It needs to weigh less than 8,500 pounds and be allowed on highways.
One rebate per person across five years. If you lease for 48 months or more you get the whole amount, and a shorter lease pays part of it:
| Lease term | Rebate portion | Electric car | Plug-in hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| At least 48 months | Full | $5,000 | $2,500 |
| 36 months | Three-quarters | $3,750 | $1,875 |
| 24 months | Half | $2,500 | $1,250 |
| 12 months | A quarter | $1,250 | $625 |

New Levy on Electric Cars
As of October 1, 2026, Nova Scotia adds a levy at each registration renewal, and a registration covers two years. An electric car pays $500 and a plug-in hybrid pays $250. It is worth folding into the running cost whenever you compare cars.
Rebates Before 2026
The old federal program was iZEV, which paid as much as $5,000. It was put on hold January 10, 2025 once its funding ran dry, and it formally closed at the end of March 2025. The current program began on February 16, 2026 and lasts until March 31, 2031. Its funding is limited: $1.92 billion of its $2.275 billion remained on October 1, 2026.

Common Questions
Does Tesla qualify for the EV rebate in Nova Scotia?
One Tesla does: the 2026 Tesla Model Y RWD lists at $49,990, just under the $50,000 cap, so it comes to $44,990 in Nova Scotia after the federal $5,000. The Model 3 is not on Transport Canada's list, so it earns nothing.
